Gundam: timelines, universes and watch or read order
Choose a universe before you choose an order.
The Witch from Mercury: Prologue, then seasons 1 and 2
Our recommendation for a modern first watch: a self-contained setting that does not require decades of earlier shows. If you want the original story instead, start with Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) and follow the Universal Century core below.
Sources: Gundam official: The Witch from Mercury introduction
A starting guide to the major animated settings and selected manga. It is not an exhaustive list of every short, game, novel or side story. The suggested orders are editorial advice; sources support the facts and do not imply an official endorsement. Guides avoid major plot reveals, but linked sources may contain spoilers.
Timelines and universes
A calendar name tells you which setting you are in. Universal Century has many connected stories; most other settings provide their own entrance. Shared mobile-suit designs and familiar themes do not make every title a sequel.
- U.C. · the original continuity
Universal Century
Start with the 1979 story. Its early core runs through Zeta, ZZ and Char’s Counterattack; later works expand different periods.

Ad Stella
A separate setting built around corporations, a technology school and mobile-suit duels. Begin with Prologue.

SEED → SEED Destiny → SEED Freedom. Follow this family of titles independently of Universal Century.

Gundam 00 seasons 1–2 → A wakening of the Trailblazer. A separate Earth and a new cast.

After Colony
Gundam Wing → Endless Waltz. Choose either the OVA or movie version of Endless Waltz.

- P.D. · Iron-Blooded Orphans
Post Disaster
Iron-Blooded Orphans seasons 1–2 form the starting path. No Universal Century homework is needed.

- F.C. · G Gundam
Future Century
A world of martial-arts mobile-suit tournaments. Start Mobile Fighter G Gundam at episode 1; its contest is not another Universal Century war.

- A.W. · Gundam X
After War
A postwar Earth where survivors recover mobile suits. Start After War Gundam X at episode 1; it establishes its own history.

- A.G. · Gundam AGE
Advanced Generation
One TV story follows successive generations. Watch Gundam AGE from episode 1; Memory of Eden revisits part of that story rather than continuing as season 2.

- C.C. · Turn A Gundam
Correct Century
A distant-future setting with buried technological history. Start Turn A at episode 1. Its connections to earlier Gundam ideas are something to discover within the story.

- R.C. · Reconguista in G
Regild Century
A later era looking back on Universal Century history. Choose the TV series or the five-film retelling in numbered order. Treat it as its own viewing path rather than forcing all distant-future lore into one checklist.

- Model battles and stylized spin-offs
Build and SD branches
Build Fighters and Build Divers offer model-battle stories; SD is a broad family of stylized works. Pick a named series rather than treating this group as one timeline.

- An alternate Universal Century
GQuuuuuuX
Treat this as an alternate-history branch, not the next chapter after the original show. We recommend seeing the 1979 story first to recognize what it is playing with.

The Universal Century core
This is our suggested foundation, in release order for these four works. It gives you the background before the later prequels and side stories.
Mobile Suit Gundam (1979)
Choose the TV series or the original three compilation films in order: I, Soldiers of Sorrow, Encounters in Space. You do not need both versions.
View anime in the catalogMobile Suit Zeta Gundam — TV series
Use the TV version on this path. Its later film retelling is an alternative version, not an extra season.

Continue the TV story; a change in tone does not make it a separate universe.

Continue beyond the core
These are useful next stops, not requirements for trying another universe. This is a selected story-time path, not their release order.
Gundam Unicorn
U.C. 0096. Choose the original OVA or its RE:0096 TV recut, not both.

U.C. 0097. Follow Unicorn.

U.C. 0105. Char’s Counterattack is the key background; Unicorn and Narrative are optional for this branch. This film is a starting point, not the whole Hathaway story.

Prefer to read? Start with The Origin
Gundam began as animation. Its manga include retellings and side stories, so there is no single manga that every anime adapts.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin — from volume 1
Read this retelling in publication order. Kodansha lists 12 standard collected volumes; the Deluxe edition groups the material differently. Follow the numbering within one edition.
View manga in the catalogOptional: Gundam Thunderbolt — from volume 1
A separate manga branch using the One Year War setting. Start its own first volume; it is not volume 13 of The Origin.

Where do the Universal Century side stories fit?
A selected story-time outline is 0079 (the original, The 08th MS Team and much of 0080) → 0083 (Stardust Memory) → 0087 (Zeta) → 0088 (ZZ) → 0093 (Char’s Counterattack) → 0096 (Unicorn) → 0097 (Narrative) → 0105 (Hathaway) → 0123 (F91) → 0153 (Victory). Stories can overlap or include flashbacks. Use this to orient yourself after the core, not as a demand to interleave episodes on a first watch.

Before you jump in
The Origin anime and manga cover different amounts of story
The anime adapts the historical section of The Origin manga. It does not replace the entire 1979 story. Our first-watch path saves it until you know the original cast.

Recuts are choices, not mandatory extra steps
Compilation films and TV recuts often retell material. The guide names the recommended version instead of adding every version to your watchlist.
