Fate: timelines, universes and watch or read order

Three routes through one war. Many worlds beyond it.

Start here · our recommendation

Anime: Unlimited Blade Works. Reading: Fate/stay night REMASTERED.

For an anime-first visit, we suggest the 2014–2015 Unlimited Blade Works TV adaptation, then the Heaven’s Feel films, then Fate/Zero. For the fullest introduction to all three routes, read the visual novel in Fate → Unlimited Blade Works → Heaven’s Feel order.

Focuses on Fate/stay night and entry points into major Fate branches. It does not attempt a single chronology for every TYPE-MOON work. The suggested orders are editorial advice; sources support the facts and do not imply an official endorsement. Guides avoid major plot reveals, but linked sources may contain spoilers.

How the stories connect

Timelines and universes

A route is an alternative way the same starting situation unfolds, not a later season. A prequel goes back in time. The wider franchise also has separate worlds that reuse ideas such as Masters, Servants and Holy Grail Wars.

The anime-first recommendation

This prioritizes a coherent modern introduction and saves Zero’s background revelations for later. It does not cover the Fate route completely; choose the visual novel below if you want all three routes.

  1. Unlimited Blade Works — Prologue / episode 0

Use the prologue for the 2014 TV adaptation.

  2. Unlimited Blade Works — season 1 (2014)

Choose the TV series, not the separate 2010 film with the same route name.

  3. Unlimited Blade Works — season 2 (2015)

Finish the TV adaptation before beginning a different route.

  4. Heaven’s Feel I: presage flower

The story returns to the shared starting situation and follows another route.

  5. Heaven’s Feel II: lost butterfly

Continue the film trilogy in numbered order.

  6. Heaven’s Feel III: spring song

    Finish the Heaven’s Feel route.

Read · All three routes

Read the source visual novel

Fate/stay night is originally a visual novel, not a manga. REMASTERED has an official English release. Follow the routes in this order; this is the most complete starting path we recommend.

  1. Fate route

Start with the first route and let it establish the world and characters.

    Official Fate/stay night REMASTERED release
  2. Unlimited Blade Works route

Read the second route as an alternative outcome, not as events after the Fate ending.

  3. Heaven’s Feel route

Read the third route last; it builds on what you have learned from the earlier routes.

  4. Optional afterward: Fate/hollow ataraxia

An additional visual novel to explore after all three routes. It is not required before you watch Zero.

Read · Adaptation caveat

If you specifically want manga

Choose a named adaptation and begin at its volume 1. Do not combine different route adaptations into one continuous manga sequence, or assume they all cover the same material.

  1. Fate/stay night by Datto Nishiwaki

The earlier manga adaptation draws primarily on Fate with material from other routes. It is a different reading experience from the visual novel.

  2. Unlimited Blade Works or Heaven’s Feel manga

These are separate route adaptations. Choose the route you want to read; check the publisher, language and available volumes before buying.

An optional Grand Order anime path

This is story-chapter order for selected adaptations, not release order or a complete account of the game. First Order is the starting point; the early singularities between it and Camelot are not all covered by this anime path.

  1. Fate/Grand Order: First Order

Begin with the introductory TV special.

  2. Camelot: Wandering; Agateram → Paladin; Agateram

The two films adapt the sixth singularity. Expect missing context from earlier game chapters.

  3. Babylonia: episode 0, then the TV series

Watch Initium Iter first, then episodes 1–21. This is the seventh singularity.

  4. Solomon

The concluding singularity of this part of the game. It draws on characters and events beyond what these anime adaptations show.

What about chronological or release order?

Story time puts Zero before the Fifth Holy Grail War, but the three stay night routes are alternatives at that later point. For the central anime adaptations, release order is Fate/stay night (2006) → Unlimited Blade Works film (2010) → Zero (2011–2012) → Unlimited Blade Works TV (2014–2015) → Heaven’s Feel films (2017–2020). That includes repeated material. Zero-first is a valid preference if you accept earlier exposure to stay night’s mysteries; our default above prioritizes discovering them through stay night.

Before you jump in

Where does the 2006 anime go?

The 2006 Fate/stay night adapts primarily the Fate route while borrowing from others. You can watch it first for a release-order approach, or return to it later. Our default recommends the visual novel for the Fate route rather than implying Unlimited Blade Works replaces it.

The 2010 film and the 2014 TV series are alternatives

Both adapt Unlimited Blade Works. The film is not a sequel to the TV series, and this beginner path chooses the longer TV adaptation.

There is no required franchise-wide marathon

Finish your chosen core path, then pick a branch that interests you. Shared faces and terminology do not make every spin-off a direct continuation of Shirou’s story.
